Faezeh Dousty Bio:
I hold a Ph.D. and a M.Sc. degree in Analytical Chemistry, and a B.Eng. in Food Science & Technology. I have worked in Production/QC managerial positions and also as an independent ISO 9000 consultant in food industries for years. After my Ph.D. graduation from the University of British Columbia, I worked as a Research Scientist for three years in an analytical laboratory, with the focus on medical cannabis testing. I was responsible for method development for cannabis quality control testing and also writing research proposals on analytical protocols for measuring/monitoring the health effects of medical cannabis. Just recently, I joined Ten-10 Ventures Inc. for CSO and QA/QC roles, as the companyâs short and long-term goals interest me a great deal.
I am looking forward to this AMA very much as I think the topic of women in cannabis deserves a little more precedence not only within our forum community, but indeed the entire cannabis community worldwide. I have gotten to know Dr. Dousty over the course of the last year and have nothing but the utmost respect for her passion, drive and professional approach to cultivation of cannabis. I believe she represents the very essence of the seasoned cannabis professional. @fdousty s a leader in our industry and I think she brings a lot of wisdom to our forum. Itâs an honor for her to accept our invitation for an AMA today.

Iâm a business woman in Canada (steel fabrication) but have recently applied for my licence to grow commercially - for the record - I donât recognize a glass ceiling in cannabis or a difference in gender for this or any other business. Agreed?

I take this opportunity to say a big thank you to this network, when I joined the network, I planned to find my voice and character and it helped me a lot. Among many, @Growernick have been always a great help and inspire for me. Thank you all!
For sure. I am originally from Iran. I have a B. Eng. in food since and technology and worked in the food industry in production and QC/QA roles for years. Then for two years, I was an independent ISO 9000 consultant and I enjoyed that work very much. But then I decided to shift my education to chemistry, as I believed it is a good combination and I always love chemistry. I did a M. Sc. in Analytical Chemistry in Iran and then in 2011 immigrated to Canada and did a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry. After my graduation, I joined a lab, Supra Research and Development, as research scientist role. I was the technical writer for grants, among my other roles. As legalization of cannabis starts to be in Canadaâs future, we focused on developing quality control tests for cannabis under Supra THC and we got our ISO 17025 accreditation. About mid 2018, I decided to get more involved in all aspects of the industry, that is why I joined Ten 10 ventures Inc. as CSO and the head of QA. I am enjoying every day of my work and the adventure is getting more exciting ever since.
In my steel business, we designed and fabricated a steel rolling table to grow in - I use them in my own growing system. We have also designed and fabricated for a customer, steel towers to grow vertically. Since surgical procedures are performed on stainless steel, it seems important that âmedicineâ should be grown using the most sterile environments possible. Goodness, if hairnets and disposable jumpsuits are required - why are growers using plastic? Isnât it clear that plastic leaches?
Thatâs awesome! I often ask during AMAâs how folks found their way into the cannabis industry, in your case it sounds like the cannabis industry found you. What about working with cannabis do you most enjoy?
It is mainly the price for sq feet of the growing tables. No one can question stainless steel but honestly the initial investment in the main bottleneck. That is my thought. I invite everyone comment on this to complete/ revise my answer.
Cleanliness is vital to maintaining a healthy cultivation environments, @cheryl. Does your facility incorporate much steel in itâs design or are you using plastics, @fdousty?
Absolutely, that is the fun part. At first, it was overwhelming, I guess because of my academic background, I was complicating everything, but now, I found my approach to problem solving and it is very fun. Being that said, it is a world of learning and opportunities, which drives me interested everyday.
