Do properly cured buds make more difference than high THC?

Hi @emily21

Without a doubt, curing is probably the most important part of the final product. It makes huge differences to the flower, especially when done correctly.

The primary benefits of proper curing include:

  • Enhanced Flavor and Aroma: Curing allows the complex terpene profiles (aromatic compounds) responsible for a strain’s unique smell and taste to mature and become more pronounced. Without it, the cannabis often has an unpleasant “grassy” or “hay” taste and smell due to residual chlorophyll.
  • Increased Potency: The slow curing process facilitates the continued conversion of non-psychoactive THCA into psychoactive THC, helping the buds reach their full potential potency. It also preserves existing cannabinoids from degradation caused by excess heat, light, and oxygen.
  • Smoother Smoking Experience: The breakdown of chlorophyll and excess sugars/starches during curing results in a less harsh smoke that is easier on the throat and lungs, reducing the likelihood of coughing or headaches.
  • Prevents Mold and Bacterial Growth: By gradually and evenly removing moisture from the interior to the exterior of the buds, proper curing significantly reduces the risk of mold or mildew forming during storage.
  • Extended Shelf Life: Properly cured cannabis with stable moisture content can be stored in airtight containers for months, and even up to two years, without significant loss of quality, flavor, or potency.
