First possible death from cannabis?

The fact that this is news compared with the hundreds of deaths every day from opiods and alcohol still underscores how safe cannabis is. The case also shows the importance of keeping edibles out of the hands of children.

Whatever the cause, it is a very sad situation indeed.

Agreed - the parents must be devastated.

Article not completely accurate in its reporting. Here’s the autopsy report:

They found a THC metabolite in the urine, but that particular metabolite can persist for weeks in the blood stream, so this might not be a rapid onset of conditions as the article implies.

Now that said, there is evidence that cannabis use increases the risk of myocarditis, and since infants are particularly susceptible to environmental factors, it’s not surprising this child died. To be clear: This is not an overdose, as cannabis is not known to be toxic at any level. This death was caused by a condition that cannabis induced. If you die from cancer caused by tobacco smoke, you died from cancer, not tobacco overdose. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah they basically said “we can’t find anything else that caused the mycarditis, and the kid had cannabis metabolites in his system, so let’s assume it’s that”.

Hey everyone, was there any conclusion or solid evidence of a cannabis related death?

Not as far as I heard. They just theorized that it was the cannabis that could have caused the myocarditis, but that’s only because they couldn’t find any other cause.

Im not familiar with the myocarditis… What is that?

Basically inflammation of the heart muscle from various causes such as a virus or auto-immune issue.

Thank you! How would the cannabis inflame the heart?

It doesn’t seem like they know the mechanism, and it’s a rare association:

Makes the original article even more sketchy.
