From what I’ve read on freeze drying u basically need the freeze dryer to actually get it good. U can do it in a freezer but I wanna say from memory it took a long time for it to happen or something like. Freeze dryers r expensive as shit too. Have u looked into the cannacure cool dryer. Like 1400 bucks but the 3 or 5 guys I know have one absolutely love it says it make for a great end product.
Yea I haven’t seen anyone with definitive results/pictures/reviews of freezer drying. A lot of people who have apparently done it say it takes long, which I’m totally fine with, but the way they describe makes it sound like bro science, which Im trying to avoid. A lot of the results led me to getting an actual freeze dryer and unfortunately they are too expensive and I barely have room in my apartment with the spaces I’m using/already have set aside. I’ll look into the cannacure though. It’s absolutely an investment I want to make at some point.
Ohhhh this is wayyyy smaller than I thought it would be. Thanks! That’s actually a great piece of info.
@pr1 uses the cannacure there were a few that do and love it. It’s a bit heavy for my pockets tho having 3 kiddos lol. One day I shall own one rho. I suffer from having bad dry conditions myself. I have to hang for so many days then I jar them up and add hygro meters to each jar and watch the jars. If rh gets too high dump out for a while but jar drying helps me a lot save the crops. It sux to keep open close open close but way better than smoking hay. Lol. If I have a big enough plant I’ll use a five gallon bucket for drying and curing but I usually run 1 plant of each flavor so no need for a big bucket. I do believe I found me a keeper strain tho as the smell is amazing and I’m hoping it’s gonna have the taste like it smells. G33 x trufflez mmmmmm cannot wait to try it. Just had the whole top of my black trufflez x forbidden zkittlez plant snap clean off and was laying on top of the rest of the plant. Prolly 2 weeks early from chop but super super close I like a bit more amber to mine tho so she may be plenty done and I just take it too far. Lol
I’m the opposite in that sense. I’ll chop early I love the high of that milky white kief. Yea I think thats a worthy option though. Definitely a wallet whopper too. Seems very worth it from the reviews I’m looking at at.
So here’s the supposed science behind drying in your home freezer. You hang dry for a couple days to get the moisture content low enough to prevent the water inside from completely freezing the nugs. The temp and rh apparently don’t matter because freezers made after a certain date all have a defrosting function. This makes a home freezer a pseudo freeze dryer to begin with the main difference is a freeze dryer has its own pressure system which allows the system to quickly force the moisture out. In a regular freezer the low temp preserves terpenes and if the rh from the moisture leaving the bud gets high the freezers compressor will kick on both removing actually humidity while not affecting the temperature in a way that you would lose terps. I’m no engineer but I’m pretty sure that all tracks. I’d really love any one else’s opinion on this to make sure I’m not unintentionally wearing a pointed white cap on this.
Suppose you’re talking about the Cannatrol Cool Cure? I use Cannacure and it’s a foliar IPM, not a fridge:p
Haha I realized that when I searched it. Definitely what he meant. Looks pretty damn nifty.
Yeah I don’t doubt it’s drying & curing qualities. Only downside is it can only hold 2.2 lbs wet. You can store 4lbs dried bud in there though. I would need 2 units (a lot of us here with perpetual grows would I reckon) 1 for drying/curing and another for storing ![]()
I did a little reading, and once again not an engineer, but isn’t this pretty much the same thing?
It definitely is and so are wine coolers… Just not sure how well you can program em to what is desired, like that Cannatrol.
I agree @MrMonkey420 cannatrol is DEFINITELY costly but I feel as if most of the time you get what you pay for , eventually I do plan on getting a cannatrol I’ve heard nothing but great things including time shortening for real , with just as good if not better product in the end:man_shrugging:t3: again I haven’t used one … yet … ![]()
I know the whole “you get what you pay for” thing with hardware. I own two more lights and an extra tent more than I should because I was being cheap. However, I literally scoured their website and I cannot find what makes their product different from a peltier cigar humidor. They don’t explain it at all. I clicked the link for vaportrol technology on their website and it redirected me to a YouTube link of the company explaining how moisture activity is used as an industry standard for other non-cannabis, non-agricultural industries but never explain any of the science or hardware or even mention their own product. That’s a huge red flag for me. They emphasize dew point over rh as use for moisture control but don’t explain how it controls that. So as far as I can see it’s quite literally an extremely over priced thermoelectric cigar cabinet. It’s priced similarly to a freeze dryer but as far as I can tell it’s hardware is identical to the humidor. If someone has one I’d love to ask how it controls the humidity inside. It’s not pressurized is it?
Yeah that’s it. Hey I was super close. Lol. Thanks @MrMonkey420 lol.
I was told if u half dry hang for a couple days get some moisture out in a good spot then store inu can fit more but not a whole lot more. Also was told it does make for a way better taste in the product I’m slowly convincing the wife into one one day it’s gonna be I had to it was on sale or something and beg for forgiveness lol.
So I did some research and asked some people on forums what makes it different. It apparently calculates vpd and uses that to determine ideal drying conditions. This allows the unit to make minor adjustments as moisture leaves the flower. That is a 1000 dollar vpd controller. A boveda pack is less than ten dollars. With the peltier humidor and a boveda pack Ive achieved 90% of the same environment that their product is ensuring it proprietarily creates for a third of the price. Just have to change out the boveda or have two humidors. one for dry, one for cure which would still be significantly cheaper. They’re essentially apple selling convenience and I’m not sure if that convenience is worth the additional price to me personally. Also if my science is bad please call me out. I did a lot of reading but I never know what to take seriously. Just not trying to buy a Honda with a Ferrari badge slapped on it ya know? A lot of hardware like that in cannabis.
@mista_ebs Agree… I’ve used boveda packs for a long time and still do, but I find they strip the terps out of my bud tho. All of my product I store in jars with the packs get that ‘boveda aroma’ to em. Haven’t tried another brand, I know @PreyBird1 uses the Integra packs, but I guess it’ll be the same thing with them.
Am going to try Grove Bags. Expecting the buds will be a little more dry than what I like (around 62% for vaping) but if hold their terps well, I’m a happy man.
Yea I’m unfortunately very familiar with the boveda aroma/flavor. Used to get street zips from a guy who would just throw a boveda 62 size 60 in the bag. Literally ruined the weed everytime. I was looking at Grove bags too. The grow my friend works at uses them. He says they work exactly as advertised and no issues so far.
Several growers here use grove bags.
Once I get more optimal amounts from my harvests I’d love to do a comparison for a couple of these dry and cure methods. I’m home enough that I can check things a few times a day but that doesn’t necessarily mean I want to have to be hands on all the time. So finding a method that gives me a good balance will certainly be pertinent. Plus I think it would be fun to see the comparison. Although it would be truly anecdotal.
