Fogponics in your growroom

Aeroponics 2.0 (aka high-pressure aeroponics) is different from the aero systems that first appeared commercially in the 1990s. These systems produce a very light mist that floats around in the air and looks like fog, so the term fogponics is often used to describe this style of growing.
I would like to know if anyone has used this style growing first hand.

How safe is that to work around I wonder?

In a fogponics system, water and nutrients are atomized and distributed in a mist with droplets in the range of 30-80 microns. A droplet of 50 microns is the optimal size roots can uptake, as determined by NASA’s research on aeroponic potatoes in the International Space Station during the ’90s.

Our team has been looking at making the switch from soil to some type of hydroponics system. This lead us to fogponics. I’m not sure anyone is doing it on an industrial scale. Considering seemingly low maintenance and easy nutrient absorption we are going to try it out. Hopefully in a month we something going.

I would love to see pics of your fogponics setup when you get it going! I would especially love to see this style tried out on a commercial scale to better understand its feasibility and overall utility. If you do set up the fogponic system, will you please post some pics, @mammoth?

Oregon Coast Farms has been doing 150 psi aeroponics (fogponics) for three years. It works. The most important thing to know before you start is that the nutrient concentration must be seriously reduced or you will get nutrient burn.

Very interesting. This actually seems like a tremendous benefit to utilizing fogponics versus traditional cultivation strategies to me. If I can reduce my nutrient usage throughout the grow cycle, doesn’t my cost of goods sold also go down? Multiply this by thousands of plants and fogponics could be the answer to saving some serious overhead. What are your thoughts, @kirkcollier

How are the yields compared to other hydroponic cultivation setups?

I don’t know how this compares to other hydroponic setups. We get a little less that 2 lbs of dried bud per light. We also use CO2 so don’t know how that factors in as well. Our nutrient levels are about 5/8 of the recommended levels by the manufacturer.
