GMP certification: What cannabis oil brands needs to know

You may hear about GMP, but do you really know what GMP is? Here is a quick guide for you to know more about GMP.

What is GMP?

GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practices. In other words, it’s a set of rules and procedures related to the handling, cleaning, quality assurance and packaging process in manufacturing facilities and the products they make. Many countries, including Canada, the United States, the European Union and Australia, has legislated that food and pharmaceutical manufacturers follow GMP procedures to ensure that a food or drug product is safe for human consumption. This is also a criteria for oil brands or licensed cannabis producers to choose a reliable supplier.

For cartridges business, what concerns oil brands and oil producers most recently? You may say price or quality. The truth is that they care more about safety, non-toxic. As California’s new regulation took into effect on January, all legal cannabis vape carts are subject to stringent new heavy metal testing. Thus, it requires better assembly environment for each manufacturing process. Transpring is such a cartridge manufacturer who owns GMP facility.

Transpring is a pioneer in vape fields, with medical standards and production in a GMP facility.

From the operation side of things there hasn’t been many changes, from day one of bringing plants onsite we have maintained high standards from our cultivation practises to our day-to-day operations. We strive to keep our facility inspection ready every morning as our regulatory bodies enjoy surprise visits.

The biggest battle has been updating our SOP’s and QA policies to reflect GMP standards, examples would be paperwork that is included in batch records as well as sanitation practices and records, monitoring/tracking batch records and expiration dates on the products we have on site, training records etc. Most of which we already have in place but in bring to the GMP level there is additional information that is required.

That’s the best way to get started on the right note! It makes sense that it would make getting GMP certification easier.

How have you been dealing with this challenge?

Our core team meets weekly to discuss how our process are functioning and determines changes that need to be implemented, these changes are then passed along to our QA department where we have brought on a few dedicated resources that are responsible for these updates.
