Looking at hemp seed sources it looks like a lot of the seed available is all in bulk 2500 seed minimum and up with some 10k and up. Why the large minimum numbers? Anywhere to buy smaller quantities to experiment with?
Talking about farm bill compliant seeds.
Seems to be unique to hemp, just wondering why the departure from cannabis where seeds can be purchased in smaller quantities.
This is a problem we often hear echoed in the burgeoning hemp market. @Geneticists and @mastergrowers and @growopowners may be able to lend a hand to find some smaller seed quantities. Good luck!
Why would 2500 seeds be a problem. That number of seeds is a small number for someone truly planning to farm in the hemp industry. Hemp farming requires much acreage and acreage requires many plants.
I was surprised as well when I wanted to buy some and they were $25 for a pound of them. I am sure it will be a matter of time now that they online seed banks will add them in smaller quantities. Does anyone have any good photo’s of some hemp plants? Is it practical to grow them indoors? thanks
wow !
Hemp is a commodity, grown by farmers for biomass, CBD, food and feed.
like all seed producers, they have genetics to protect and they are NOT looking for one time sales to farmers (like your cannabis seed banks), it’s a different market, involves research, breeding programs, climate models, patents and large scale production.
Just peruse Oregon CBD’s binding sales agreements and Sargenta’s and you will where the industry is going very quickly.
for commercial farming 2500 is not a problem. I had mentioned smaller amounts to experiment with not for large scale cultivation.
What i see is just a narrow focus on large scale with contracts on seed like the big AG companies do. I just wonder why not much access for seed for non commercial?
I completely understand it from a large scale commodity. I realize they are trying to protect genetics like the large AG companies. Completely understand what all goes into developing seed for AG. Understandable but surprised a bit on how limited the market seems.
I also know a lot of farmers are working with smaller plots. I would think that the smaller farmers could be beneficial to the research of the plant also. It looks like those farmers are being pushed to have to rely on contracts of seed etc.
I see all the great strains being developed on the cannabis side and it seems like the hemp market is already locking down.
I have no doubt it will go the way of large AG just figured it would be by the big seed companies. Looks to be smaller operations. Wonder how long for big AG to either buy those outfits or start competing.
I would think you would see hemp seed on some of the seed bank websites alongside Cannabis seed. Any reason why hemp can’t be spread in a more open market? Seems like CBD flower and Oil have a fairly good market even on a smaller growers set up.
you do, its just used as CBD rich strains for medicine and planted like cannabis.
the real market for hemp (think farm bill) requires large acreage for seed, oil and fiber products.
It is hard to infer irrigation effects, water quality and usage, fertilizer needs, harvest dates and IPM requirements on small test plots
I know some bird feed consists of pure hemp seeds. When Iwas a kid I worked at an exotic bird farm and we had massive 50 pound sacks. The seeds were steamed, but I did get some to germinate. That being said, some of those companies should have a line on massive amounts of seeds.Something to look into.
