James Duke, 88, Globe-Trotting Authority on Healing Plants, Is Dead

Professor Duke died this week.

Doctor Duke was one of the leaders in the study ethnobotany. His later works were more gear to the general public.

His work in cannabis and it’s medical properties was the first professional publication since cannabis was band in the USA, first as part of the pure food act and finally in 1937.

He was a truly inspirational speaker. His hard science work has held up over time.

His advocacy for environmental protection of worlds jungles was outstanding.

His documentation of the pharmaceutical properties of plants and how people use the is amazing.

I like two of his books.

  • Duke, J. A. 1972. Isthmanian Ethnobotanical Dictionary . Fulton, Maryland: Author. Note: I think there are new editions of this book.

  • Duke, J. A. 1985. CRC Handbook of Medicinal Herbs . Boca Raton, Florida, CRC Press, Inc

He has left his mark on all of horticulture.

His memory is a true blessing.

in pace requiescat, Dr. Duke. We are losing some of our founding voices at rapid rates. Much gratitude for the impact his research has had on all of our lives, whether we realize it or not. Dr. Duke will indeed be missed

It’s a shame to see such a good researcher go.
