LED Chip For LED Grow Light

Understanding the Importance of LED Chips in Grow Lights

At the light source of every LED grow light. These chips are the components that emit light when an electrical current passes through them. Unlike traditional lighting solutions such as high-pressure sodium (HPS) or fluorescent lights, LED chips can be engineered to emit specific wavelengths of light. This capability is crucial for plant growth, as different stages of plant development require different light spectra.

Plants primarily absorb light in the blue and red regions of the spectrum. Blue light (around 450 nm) is essential for vegetative growth, while red light (around 660 nm) promotes flowering and fruiting. LED chips can be designed to emit these specific wavelengths, ensuring that plants receive the optimal light spectrum for each growth stage.

Well that is only partly correct. Both fluorescents and sodium vapor as well as MH can be made to emit different colors. It’s all in the gas composition. But I will agree it is much easier to make specific colors using light emitting diodes.

Types of LED Chips Used in Grow Lights

There are several types of LED chips used in grow lights, each with its own advantages and applications. The most common types include:

  1. SMD (Surface-Mounted Device) LED: SMD LEDare widely used in grow lights due to their versatility and efficiency. These chips are mounted directly onto the surface of a circuit board, allowing for a compact and lightweight design. SMD LEDare available in various sizes, such as LED 3535, LED 5050, LED 3030 and LED 2835, with the numbers indicating the chip dimensions in millimeters. They can emit different colors, including red, blue, and full spectrum, making them suitable for all stages of plant growth.

  2. COB (Chip-on-Board) LED: COB LEDare known for their high lumen output and uniform light distribution. In this configuration, multiple LED chips are packaged together as a single module, which is then mounted onto the grow light fixture. COB LEDare particularly beneficial for grow lights because they produce a concentrated and intense light that can penetrate deep into the plant canopy, promoting even growth. However, the COB heat dissipation performance is not good

Factors to Consider When Choosing LED Chips for Grow Lights

Selecting the right LED chip for your grow light is crucial to ensure optimal plant growth. Several factors should be considered during the selection process:

  1. Spectrum: The spectrum of the LED chip is perhaps the most important factor to consider. Depending on the type of plants you are growing and the stage of growth, you may need chips that emit specific wavelengths. For instance, if you are focusing on vegetative growth, blue light-emitting chips 450nm would be ideal. For flowering and fruiting stages, red light-emitting chips 660nm are more suitable. Full spectrum LEDcan be a good all-around choice if you want to cover all growth stages.

  2. PPE Efficiency: The PPE efficiency of an LED chip is measured in terms of how much light it produces per watt of electricity consumed (measured in micromoles per joule, µmol/J). Higher efficiency chips produce more light while consuming less energy, which is beneficial for both plant growth and reducing operational costs. Leading manufacturers like Samsung,Osram and Ledestar produce high-efficiency LED chips that are commonly used in premium grow lights.

  3. Heat Dissipation: Heat management is another critical factor when choosing LED chips for grow lights. High-power LEDcan generate a significant amount of heat, which can affect both the lifespan of the LED and the plants if not properly managed. Look for chips that are designed with good heat dissipation properties, or ensure that the grow light fixture includes adequate cooling systems.

  4. Durability and Lifespan: The durability of the LED chip is also important, especially in commercial growing operations where the lights may be running for 12-18 hours a day. LEDgenerally have a long lifespan, often rated for 50,000 hours or more, but it’s important to choose chips from reputable manufacturers to ensure reliability and longevity. When choosing the LED chip, it is better to use those LED that warranty with LM-80/UL.

What is Ozram’s equivalent to the LM or plant centric diodes

LM is not so important in horticulture, PPE is much imporatnt.

LM are very important in my opinion they were the best diodes you could get until plant centric /evo came out they had the highest efficiency and they are some of the brightest diodes you can get and therefore with an even spread of diodes you get great ppfd and very good penetration and with the higher efficiency that’s a money saver you can run them lower and not be so hot as compared to a cheaper diode that has to be really cranked to put out some light

Maybe you can learn about Ledestar’s nova series led. Have high ppfd and very good penetration and with the higher efficiency.

I would love to that’s why I was asking what your equivalent was
