Has anyone ever done any modeling to try to understand how many acres are actually necessary to supply the cannabis necessary for a given state, or the entire US, assuming that the growth estimates from Arcview et al are reasonably accurate?

Not from my understanding. Your most likely bet for research of that sort will probably come from Israel, as they have a government run medical system.
