Employment Law Update for Pittsburgh, Pa.
As part of CEDR’s commitment to keeping its Solution Center members * in compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, we are sharing some important news about law changes that may affect you as an employer:
Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh has a new law that goes so far to protect pregnancy in the workplace that it includes protections for a pregnant individual’s partner. We will be contacting our Pittsburgh members about necessary handbook changes.
It also completely changes how you will need to handle/address issues such as absenteeism and request for time off if your employee has children or a spouse who is about to have a child. An example is that you now need to accommodate a request to attend doctor appointments regardless of whether the parent is the one who is expecting. Thinking that you will require a note proving that the request is valid? Think again, for the most part, that is not allowed.
The law also specifically addresses discrimination actions taken which are based on your employee being an expecting parent.
