Seeds and genetics question

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are all healthy and gearing up for Spring. Longer and warmer days are here and I love it.

So here’s what I’ve been wondering: When ordering from any given seed bank or company how do you really know that you are getting what you pay for? The risk seems pretty high on the buyer’s side of this equation at least to me. Say you order some seeds, we’ll call it “Bunny Foo Foo Death Rattle Sour” from the “Stinky Sphincter Seed Company”. You pay for the seeds, they show up and you plant them. If your grow is unsuccessful there really is no way to know months down the road if what you planted is what you paid for. I’m not looking for a debate on the subject I just want to know why I have this feeling that it is still, at the end of the day, very much a crap shoot.

My questions are:
Is this an actual problem?
Are people abusing the current system that seems to be based primarily on consumer trust?
If so how badly?
Are there any protections in place for consumers and do they help?

Let me know what you guys think or share some info on the subject just for the sake of curiosity. Thanks guys :wink:

@Slym3r Hey Man!

See what I mean? I think it is a good subject to ponder because of the ramifications it might have for the future of this incomprehensibly amazing plant. Since I started growing I feel that I have a responsibility to do my part to protect this plant and ensure that whatever future it has that it has as much truth and integrity I can give it.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the subject? @Tygrow78 @PreyBird1 ?

Buy from a reputable dealer with some fame and honor to protect you will be just fine.but yes so many fakes out there it’s scary. If buying off a lesser known breeder you will find they are less likely to rip you off if they don’t sell their seed for a high price. A honest dealer/breeder will do what they can to make sure you have a good experience and will give you the benefit of doubt untill you prove yourself to be a customer that is just looking for free stuff or to trash their name. My suggestion for a100% satisfactory experience if in the usa is give seeds here now a go james beans and the :bear: will guarantee you satisfactory beans.these guys are big dogs in the game and get their seeds direct from the legends that produce them!! If you have absolutely any complaint they will ENCOURAGE you to let them know so they can get it right and they will ask you if you are happy with the resolution!

I feel the same way. Like the free seeds for using bit coin? What are those! I usually give the free seeds away. But there really is no guarantee? What if the grower had gotten seeds they didn’t know what they truly were.
You can really only prove it with Genotype testing. But that doesn’t stop people from infringing on a patent you have on a genotype. just gives you more ownership proof if you go to court to fight. And what lab is doing the genotyping? They can take your strain and copy it and put you out of business eventually. There are so many sneaky companies and all kinds of rampant thefts of peoples genetics. And consumers should review the product results. Not how fast shipping was or nice the service was. Very interesting subject. I believe trust with the seed banks is a must and really well known breeders usually have a great record for decades of genetics. I dont like seeds in bags from a bulk bin of seeds?? I like sealed packs with special sealed anti-tamper stickers and proof of authenticity.

What i hate also is the so called “Stealth tracking” where the seeds are removed from breeders original packaging at there discretion and they state this on shopping cart screen. I RUN like hell from those places.

I feel you @truthhound. I thought about this alot especially after reading countless articles about labs doing analysis of flower samples and proving their knockoffs.
I have a really hard time trusting any genetics that don’t come from the original breeder, in sealed breeders packs.
Always use a trusted seedbank that others can vouge for.
