Size matters!

I thought it would great to get some discussion going on pot sizing . For years all the old timers I new including myself used big containers outdoor . The bigger the better and get that hole charged up early and feed it as much at it will eat and grow monsters .

I have over the years switched to indoor hydro
My question for the group

How do you grow ? Soil , hydro , organic , dwc etc
What is your preferred pot size , when and why ?

I found for me
Hydro
Coco using nutes
Deli for seeds or 20 oz wax cups
3gallon May be big enough ?

Last time I ran some 5 gallons and some 1gallon net pots and seen very little difference ?
What I found with coco is the just get really tippy in 1 gallons and hard to train .

For me the most explosive growth I seen was
Huge 27 gallon totes with air stones in DWC

Really curious if other coco growers have found that 1 gallons are big enough ?

Stay tuned I’m building some cool roll bases with a scrog frame that will have a 10 day wick system .

3 gallons inside are great 5 gallons are good also

7 gallons are too much

outside in the ground unless you are using 150 gallon bags or bigger maybe

truth to that

2.5 coco is my go to. 2.5 to 4 zips without training usually.

Indoor, 3 gall does it for me. Coco or peatmix, don’t care.
Outdoor I usually end up in 17 or 24 gal mason buckets or tubs. Not sure what you call em across the pond. Full organic. The bigger the better.

What do you call these?

I’d prefer to plant em full soil outdoor, but I’m running around with mine because of stealth reasons, weather, etc… 24 gal is the biggest I can handle pretty much…

Large plastic pots? Pots have the rolled edges on top…plastic tubs would be similar, available in a variety of shapes and sizes??!

Yeah, but these are specifically made for brickies to put cement in… They’re very robust and a bit flexible, makes em easier to get the leftover cement out and clean em.

Mixer tub, Mortar Tub… these for the 2wheeler carriers?

That’s it! And I’m using a carrier as well to move em around but not such a fancy one

I use the 8 Gallon EZ Store containers. It works out to 5.5 gallons to the bottom of the net pot at the beginning and by the end of the grow I am almost down to 4 gallons per change from root growth. At harvest the root ball requires a body bag… But that’s just me!

Impressive
Is that a DWC bubbler ?
I grew I giant in a bubbler once in a 5 gallon with 4 inch pot. Thanks for the reply !

Aye! DWC Bubbler with a 10 inch net pot. I am becoming more confident with each grow and I will keep going as long as I can. I just love it!
Here is some Yumboldt that I keep cloning. This is run #3 that I cut recently and #4 is on deck. I’ll bring her up when this is dry. Not too bad for a 2X4 med grow.

Nice !
I’m thinking about a bubbler with my coco grow
Side by side ?

Nope. I just grow 1 at a time because I have to carry that water and sometimes its a challenge. I let them veg and overfill the tent a bit before I flip.

Some growers in grow bags prefer the soil method because the nutrient reservoir is very bio-available, but that’s not the case with hydro. A larger pot means more room for roots, which means a larger nutrient reservoir. If you’re feeding your plants, it makes more sense to have that reservoir within easy reach than hidden away in the soil. Also, a larger pot means that the plant won’t have to work as hard to get its nutrients, which means that it can spend more of it’s energy on growth.

I’m considering a Viparspectra XS 4000 for a seedling veg light . Then blast away with a 1000 Halide . The grow room is 5 wide and feel we can add multiples as we can afford to upgrade . The plan is to use the quantum style light dimmed for seedlings and gradually bring it up to 100 percent. Then when we flip to flower and move the light to a mother cabinet or propagation area . I really think you could run full cycle with 4 of these in a 5x10 ?

Agree ! There’s been controversy on this subject . I believe both have merit at some degree . Some growers believe pot size is fine at 1 gallon . I had a really successful grow with some 1 gallons drain to waste in coco . Then I grew one in a 27 gallon bubbler and this root ball was massive and the plant was an absolute beast but we lost some serious real estate in the room .

Agree big roots big shoots !
To make the grow interesting I’ve decided to run
2 in 3 gallons drilled like huge net pots .
2 bubblers in 7 gallon DWC
1 2 site bubbler in a 27 gallon

All running Lucas formula 6 micro 9 bloom
