Thing to look out for dealing with seed breeders

So one thing I look out for when looking at new seed breeders.

  1. Do all or a large portion of there strains have the same father in them example A+b (b being the father)
c+b, d+b,e+b, what this tells me they have a bunch of females and one male . this is not a good way to breed it also tells me that they probably did not back cross their genetics and the result will be anybody’s guess. The other day I received an email from High Times with an ad for some seed bank and all their 15 strains had the same daddy. I wont buy from that breeder.

This is one major thing i look for

Thanks

I don’t like that either I like variety that being said, still doesn’t mean those f-1 the guys selling aren’t any good. Even with variety not everyone’s back breading there strains. Autos is another story but I don’t grow those anyways. Regulars rule :facepunch:t2:
Actually I’ve seen a few of those your talking about lately :man_facepalming::man_shrugging:

I think that is an important point @charlieseeds. But I also know a private breeder who only crosses Black Domina so most of his strains are Malawi Black, Swazi Black etc , he does not mess around with much else and doing it for over a decade.

Other things I look for in breeders is reputation, are their grow journals of their seeds.

If there is net a good discription of how the plant grows then they don’t know…run!

@charlieseeds, I was also wondering, why are seeds not coming out with basic breakdown of compounds now that the technology is available. Yes tests might come out with different profiles through different tests, different parts of the plant. But a simple breakdown of cannabinoids and terpenes would be a great addition.

Tell that to subcool I bet he would have a different opinion. He was stuck on space dude in a bad way lol. Tho I agree more genetics are always a great thing as long as it’s all true top shelf from famous breeders we can google to see the cups they win/won. Start with the absolute best breeder you can afford and yes make sure the breeder is working with more than a single seed to start their male program. Good breeders will have proof of their program from the get go

I absolutely love Subcools genitics! :call_me_hand::call_me_hand:
He’d get hung up on breeding with a particular strain that he really loved. But still created a huge variety of amazing strains.
Man I wish they weren’t so hard to get. Customs keeps jacking my past 3 orders. Only a couple UK seed banks have original breeders packs.
He did some collaborations here in Oregon right before he passed.
May he RIP…

No I actually have used discreetseeds.co.uk. They are the only ones that have the majority of his lineup. I got my pack of JTR, but my Nurse Jackie got jacked and some Chernobyl. They said they could change their method of stealth and packaging next time. Plus a sister growers going to receive the next pack. Thats why I only buy packs of 5 seeds.

Or it could mean they really like that strain and found an exceptional male that they wanted to put with other stuff. There are more factors to consider…

I have a few “themed” lines I plan to create. A lot of the strains in each line will share a common parent as part of the “theme”.

I would imagine that is because after they make the seed in order to do that they have to wait to sell the seed for a whole additional grow cycle. Seeds themselves contain zero THC.

I think a lot of it has to do with Time breeding can take up so much time as well as the physical work of breeding there is paper work on strain profiles plus research on the genetics of the strains you are developing, Don’t forget you have to add descriptions to your web page. you can also have an independent lab do your DNA of your created strain and that can take a couple of months so you see its a lot of work . I like to grow out an F2 strain i created at least 3 terms to make sure its a sell able product.

The difference is professional vs private, If you find a good strain stick with it after a few grows you get to learn what that strain likes and what it does not eg: maybe its a heavy feeder. But from a marketing point the professional point would you own a bar that just has vodka drinks you might but you would be losing sales when half your potential customers what a drink other than vodka. I have a strain that I have been creating and modifying for 12 years it is still in development its a nice purple hybird strain. the last 4 years I have been working with Indica outdoor strains , Next year I will start developing Sativa indoor seeds. we need more breeders like your friend who keep working on the same strains nothong wrong with specialization .

When I run across a male that is worthy - sorry but I pull out a bunch of females that I feel would benefit from crossing. Now I am talking 6-7 females. Got to make it worth while.

It is sometimes very surprising what you create. some bad, some real bad, some good and occsionally a masterpiece.
