To slab or not to slab

Hello, I am wondering if anyone here has extensive experience growing in rockwool. Here is my question, in a double layered indoor grow with leds, growing in rockwool, would it make sense to use slabs? It seems like 4” cubes are completely big enough for 2.5 foot tall plants. Maybe use 6” cubes, but slabs seem like to much. Am I wrong?

Follow up question, when using slabs, would you root your plant in the 4 or 6” cube first before placing the cube on your slab so as to avoid excessive moisture content?

Thank you

You can grow just about any size plant in any size container and medium. Heck, in aeroponics you get rid of the medium completely!

The biggest question when figuring out your container size is really “how much control do you have over your irrigation?” The smaller the container and the bigger the plant, the greater control you need to have over your irrigation. A missed watering for a tiny container could be detrimental. A missed watering on a huge container might hardly be noticed. Growing in a slab gives a lot of room for error versus growing in a 4" cube.

Thanks for that, and that definitely makes sense. If you had a high tech watering system it doesn’t sound like it would be necessary to use slabs. However, if we wanted to, are there ever any problems with the moisture level being too high if you are trying to root in a 4” or 6” cube and then placing it on a slab before the plant is rooted?
Thanks,
Josh

It’s really tough to over water in rockwool, but it can be done.

To encourage rooting I like to water deeply but less frequently; I’ve think it makes the roots “explore” the larger containers for water and the plants root a bit better.
