Trying to science for the first time. (PPM & pH)

Hope everyone is doing great! I have grown a couple plants now, all with terrible results. They do great up until flower.

I’ve been trying to study up on PPM and pH and I just don’t understand some things. I’ll try to include everything in this first post.

TS-1000
FF Soil and nutes
Tap water (~7.5 pH, ~250 PPM)
Grapefruit Autos

Both of these plants had stress early on. The single cola plant was dropped and had a very small root system. I didn’t think it would live, but I replanted it and trimmed what was broken and thought I’d see what it could do. Now, a couple months later, something is wrong. I was told it was nute burn last week, so I haven’t fed it. Just water. It’s never had water where I have paid attention to PPM (new to me). I haven’t added anything else at this point.

I’m just not sure where to go from here, to be able to salvage this plant and give myself some confidence for the next ones. Thanks in advance!!

@budsandlaughs That looks just like my first grow not so long ago. I had six little bonzi plants that all together produces about 8 grams of bud. It was cute but unsatisfying.

The experts will be along shortly to help out. @PreyBird1, @happilyretired, @sssportsmfg, @mudman, @HostileHippie420, @excommunicato, @Skinnyhb, @TheMadFlascher and those are just off the top of my head. Sorry if I left anyone out but there are just too many great growers on this forum to keep a list.

@budsandlaughs , Welcome to the forum and cannabis cultivation!!

There are a BUNCH of great growers here and you will receive a lot of help!
WOW! It’s pretty overwhelming when you jump in the ‘deep end’ LOL. It’s just ‘weed’, but like everything else in this world, the eccentricities have a tremendous effect on your results!

Congratulations are in order! Hey, you kept the plant alive AND you produced some bud!
You’re interested in pH/ppm (EC) and they ARE two critical parameters…GOOD for you!

It’s hard to explain to new growers, but you are going to be WAY better off utilizing R/O (reverse osmosis) water in your grows. If you choose, there are many effective units available that you can purchase…almost all communities have vending machines where you can bring your own (5 gal) containers and purchase R/O water fairly cheaply!!!

Certainly, you are faced with many decisions! My feeling is that if you can get a few successful grows under your belt, You are going to buy time to assimilate a lot of knowledge…

There are many other options for you and experienced growers here that can provide reliable guidance!! Good Luck!!

This is most likely the biggest contributor to the small yield. Autos can be very sensitive to early stress. Some strains are worse than others.

Nothing to beat yourself up over.

Thank you!! I’ve never thought to get water from the machines like that.

Thank you! I’m beating myself up in this one basically because it’s curling, spotted and tips are turning. I don’t know why.

@nacho151, Help @budsandlaughs setup a grow journal with all the prerequisite info…I’m getting hoarse here!!

This was my last one. Aside from going too crazy on the fan leaves (learned from that!), it’s clearly missing something. The buds on this were like feathers.

If you can keep your TS-1000 at 12 to 18 inches from the plant through out the grow that will help your flowers stop being fluffy. I run my pH between 5.8 and 6.3 and it seems to help in my grows. Are you growing in a room, closet or tent? The TS-1000 should be good for a 3x3 tent, that’s why I asked. Without knowing your ppm runoff, if you can water to runoff in your grow bags, check it and see what the manufactures numbers say it should be. I’m think based on what you posted about nutrient issues at flower that you might need to slightly increase the nutrients at flower, but don’t do it without checking your runoff ppm’s. When I 1st started I would freakout when around the 3rd week of flower my plants turned to crap and looked like they were dying or struggling to stay alive, I switched nutrients and it seems the crap I was using was the issue. Also I started using R/O water and it really helped.

remember you aren’t really a bird there @PreyBird1 and be careful up there!

Oh shit your doing it yourself for real. My man! You didn’t go cheap on equipment did you? Friend of mine climbs trees daily. His gear is NOT cheap lol. As said above be safe up there brother.

If your watering with water Ph @ 7.5 that’s a huge problem. You want to be in the 6.5 range for soil as your medium. Have you tested your run off recently or at all?

I would try a photo period plant first. Then advance to autos. You tried an auto now try a photoperiod. No i didnt go cheap on equipment. Im an eagle scout and know how to climb and rapel. And tie real knots.
I have a full harness. Helmet, 300ft of rope. I have tree spikes and flip line i also have a rope walking asender kit. I just got a new cordless electric chainsaw for camping and this tree trimming job. Lol i even have a weighted throw bag for getting my ropes up into high trees. I spent 30 minutes trying to throw the rope up into the tree into the right spot and thats harder than it looks. Hitting the tree branch crotch is a bit tricky. I kept getting tangled on branches and twigs. So tomorrow ill make up a speedline kit with these 8 carabiners and some old tie down straps i have to make em with. I already hung the access line and the lifeline into the trees. Next ill hang the speed line and start chopping branches.

Have some started. Have my eye on a spot outside.(; was a reg though we’ll see. Also did pick up a flight from chitown. I’d rather grow a couple big plants then a bunch of autos I’m gathering. A lot more maintenance for less flower. Doesn’t sound so appealing after all. I did not doubt you as you mentioned this to me before. My buddy does it for a living he’s a damn monkey up in those trees. Lol when he told me how much money goes up in that tree with him I was very surprised.

I agree with @nacho151 as far as fluffiness goes the light spacing would definitely need to be adjusted and as far as Ph I would honestly listen to @TheMadFlascher Hes a genius when it comes to plant biology an make up so if anyone would know what your babies need he would along with @PreyBird1 or @happilyretired I have Learned TONSSSSS of information from everyone HERE there is too many to tag honestly but My advice is drop your light some an pay attention to the Cannabis Gods :joy:  There is a wealth of info here I thought I knew allot after 12 years of on an off BS growing hahahahahahaha NOTHING to what I now Know! best of luck an ill definitely be following along!

Wow! Thank you!! I’ll make sure my light is 12"-18" away.

Runoff - this is where I’m stuck. I’m just scared to overwater it and then have more issues. I know everyone says 20% runoff (I think), but it makes me nervous. Lol

20% run off when you’re checking pH and ppm. That doesn’t need to be done every time you water. Once a week will Will be good enough for checking your run off. The rest of the time just give them what they need it doesn’t have to run off. :+1:t3::v:t3:
