How often do plants need to be watered if I am using a top feed “ring” drip system. I am using hydroton for my growing medium and am not sure how much water this method requires.

Plants like water daily. But It depends on a number of variables. What you need to do is check for yourself. You want the drippers spaced nicely and check how long it takes for the roots to be moistened. That is probably the most important issue you will face. You might need to water them 3 times a day with hydroton. And also depends on your humidity and size of plants. Smaller plants use less water.
