What do you call cannabis genetics, strain or cultivar?

Im repulsed by bad smells. Probably an instinct that kept my ancestors healthy and procreating. I prefer my cannabis to be floral/incense/perfume like aroma. Inviting pleasant and uplifting for the home and guests.

I understand some people may have good associations with bad smells like body odor, rotten meat, or animal bio weapons. But its not a smell I want around me or in my home.

To each his own.

I think this has strayed from the topic a bit.

In regards to a discussion on which terpene profiles are prevalent in which commercial available products, with that much info/knowledge perhaps start another thread and open the discussion on that topic. I, personally, I’m completely ignorant on that topic, but would like to see it discussed openly and in it’s own thread

Or perhaps evolved instead of strayed. Discussions tend to do that.

Once the correct terminology is revealed, which it has been, then the topic is closed. Resolved. Right?

The thread should then be closed. I can’t seem to find an option to close it, perhaps @chrisj can or the site administrator can.

Correct Terminology is a matter of definitions of those words. Use of a dictionary resolves questions and confusion of definitions. The agreed upon definition is considered correct. Its not a ‘debate’ as the topic starter stated unless someone can put forth an argurment that the definition of the words/terms is wrong, or that facts have changed.

If nobody can put forth an arguement that the definition of the terms is incorrect, or facts have changed where a new definition is needed, then the debate has ended when one side presents the agreed upon definitions of the terms. The debate can only continue if someone argues they are not correct and gives supporting evidence.

If we are limited strictly to writing only on that topic, then the thread should be closed in that case.

How do we go about closing it?

Topics always go off discussion but I think this topic can stay open as its an evolving topic, with new information all the time. I like being informed. Thanks all for your input.

We should also consider that revealing the definition of words in the thread may influence thr poll unnaturally towards the correct terminology because some may read first then simply select the correct answer on the poll.

Polls are not scientific studies, I am running duel polls anyway to gauge what the community is saying. Its just a matter of interest for a project i am working on. I have a small localised whatsapp group and posted the poll this morning. Seems strain is still the name of the culture.

No, not the name of the ‘culture’, the realm of the willfully ignorant

You got that right. I am doing a lecture tonight, so going to say the correct terminology in the correct way.

It is a form of ignorance, but to complicate that is mistakes in thought. Theprevalence of imitation for example. A typeof follower mentality. Instead of people finding out themselves through self education so they know, they default to immitating others, falsely assuming the group must be right. It has something to do with herd mentality or conformism perhaps.

The same type of people that are likely looking at each other making sure they are growing the same plants, following the same hype, and constantly comparing themselves and others to the group, but attacking anyone different that threatens their group identity.

To not use the widely ageed terminology can also be an idicator as well. Its common for followers with the group mentality to invent their own in-group lingo, which helps them confirm each other as part of the flock, but also alerts them to any individuals that may be amongst them who isn’t using their particular lingo. When the lingo is not used, and perhaps a correct terminology is used, the herd signal is then raised, and call for a coordinated attack/mobbing sent out.

Flippin plants, Strains, etc.

Etc.

Well its just weed. And no matter the effects of any types of weed ill smoke them all. Either way i just say strain/cultivar whatever i type at that time. It is odd that this thread has made me think about what to call it when i type it out now. Before i never really even thought about it. Hell we used to have only 2 types of weed. Swag = bricked with loads of seeds or kind bud = seedless. Which also took on many names as well like dank, chronic and many others. Most people that consume cannabis dont even have a clue about growing it. let alone all the chemical compositions and effects or how they interact with each other. The “Entourage” effect. You guys are talking about things that are way above most peoples understanding or have any clue about. I myself am pretty ignorant to a lot of this information also. I think this is Interesting! And im always learning new things about this plant. I’ve been enthralled with it since i got high the very first time. I never looked back… i love this plant wholeheartedly. And im always trying to learn more and more. Ill never stop.

Thats going from unconsciousness to conciousness, which is good. Increased awareness. This is a good progress. Keep doing that.

Who would benefit the most from that?

Yes, that is how it is! What will you study next? More terminology? Here is a good one: Photoprotection and photoinhubition mechanisms in plants.

Ok ill check that out. I like to listen to Bruce bugby. I cant understand a lot of the math he talks about. But i like his lectures there very mind opening and informative. If you can understand what hes talking about i mean most folks would not be interested. I wish i were more educated. I never did well enough in school to gain any scholarships and never went to college. But im always trying to learn and grow. I cannot be idle. Its my day off and im already up at 6am. I dont sleep in because that just silly to me and wasteful laziness. I feel just as tired if i sleep good or not? So whatever about that.

This man is one of my idols. And ed rosenthal.

You’ll get higher quality information by avoiding cannabis specific information, and information from cannabis product suppliers or manufacturers. Its all corrupted with marketing and full of holes to keep people ignorant/unconcious/unthinking and easily told what to buy when and how much. Our terminology for this is Zombie Growers. Basicly you dont want people that seperate each nutrient component a plant needs into 12 plastic bottles that are 90+% water telling you how to grow a plant. Best sources of information is gerneral gardening and horticulture sources. A book I can recommend is Greenhouse Operations and Management by Nelson. Its a complete education in one book. You don’t even need the latest edition starting out.

Glad I did not close the topic, the topic is back on track and going deeper not into terminology but straight down the rabbit hole into deep and dark herd mentalities. Love it. I think strain is also a generic term we can all understand because its been used for decades. it made me think of this FYAAAAA song,

"This is a special request… We dont want you to smoke genetically manufactured ganja, we want you to smoke the real thing. We want you to smoke the natural herb, some call it marijuana, some call it sensimilia, some call it lambsbread and some people call it GANJA. "

We should say though that ‘strain’ is lingo generally used for microbial life. Strain of bacteria, for example. Somebody asked me what my favorite strain was and I yold them Yersinia pestis.

I did tell my cannabis class tonight about strain referencing bacteria rather than a variety of cannabis. I also did an in-depth talk on the differences between indica, sativa, ruderalis, auto and fem. On top of that I told them the difference between recreational cannabis known as dagga here, marijuana there, that hemp is technically less than 0.2% THC in the usa, 0.3 in Europe and 0.8% in south africa. Medical cannabis well is a combination of marijuana, hemp and a range of extracted cannabinoids but to a different standard to be called medical marijuana.

Anyway after all that, I told I just don’t know, our naming conventions are a bit of a mess up and things are slowly changing since the 18th century.

If we had it perfectly right straight from the start, it wouldn’t be human. We make mistakes and adjust along the way. I mean Pluto was a planet when I was a kid. Now its not. It will take time to change people’s train of thought, but considering the topic and what it does to people’s brains the change in lingo could take awhile.

Its not like there was a good reason to have it wrong with one type of plant and correct on the rest of the plant kingdom. Man wasn’t coming down out of the tress and inventing language about what they saw 100 years ago. I can’t imagine learned people 60, 100, 150 years ago refering to higher plants as strains. Its a recent phenomenon.
