Why does cannabis make you forgetful? Might have to do with mitochondria

As you may or may not be aware, cannabinoids are endogenous to the human brain and are referred to as endocannabinoids. Our brain is built to handle a limited amount of cannabinoids.

But what happens when you ingest more cannabinoids than you find in your brain normally? A new study suggests it affects more than just the brain cells in your body. It affects the mitochondria within your brain directly. If there’s anything you should’ve learned from high school biology, it’s that the mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell.

The effects on your mitochondria reduce their energy output (ATP), which might be a large contributing factor to the amnesia that can be experienced with high doses of cannabis.
