[this might not come to any surprise, but…] As a matter of fact, I have done that. These plants are clones from my first plant. Same plant, soil, nutes, light schedule. Everything. But I trained one and not the other.
Lady (on the left) was not trained. She was also just naturally slightly larger than Spud (on the right). Spud had eleven colas on the outside, six in the center ring, and one main cola.
Lady (bigger and not trained) was harvested 7/19, and I ended up with 2.5 oz dry weight.
Lady
Spud (smaller and trained) was harvested 8/2 (two weeks later) and I ended up with 3.2 oz dry weight.
Spud
Did Spud really pack on more than an ounce of bud in the two extra weeks of flower (sunshine) that her sister didn’t get? I don’t know. Maybe. But I do know that daily/weekly maintenance of Spud was easier because she was trained. And harvesting, washing, and trimming was WAY easier with Spud than it was with Lady.
And here’s another comparison… The mother plant (Wash 1.0) was re-vegged and she is the plant on the left. Memory (on the right) is another clone, taken the same time as Spud and Lady. Spud is in the middle. You can see all the binder clips around the edge of her pot.
But Spud and Lady were in 3 gal pots, and Wash and Memory were in 7 gal pots and were outside 24/7.
Anyway… I think that training Spud allowed for a better yield. Lady was harvested first because she was bigger, but Spud had the larger net gain.
(@mudman dude…this was a trip down memory lane…)
I don’t know how easy or difficult AN is to use, but Jacks is super easy. As much work as training looks like, it made everything else so much easier all the way through trimming. Measure once, pour once, the same way every time… from start to finish. I don’t want to work hard. I want my hobbies to be fun.
Challenging? Yes. Hard? No.
Amazing grow! Such beautiful colors.
Great topic @sssportsmfg and I am doing that in my current grow with my Humboldt Seeds. Since I germinated an extra set of seeds I’m going to grow plants in my 2×4’ tent scrogged like I usually do. Then a couple in my Veg tent with minimal training.
I could be one of those people your talking about cuz I do some crazy training with my plants. During the 2nd week of flower too.
I have very limited space in a 2×4’ tent so I wanted to use every square inch of space to grow flowers.
I had to experiment a little with my 1st few grows to get it right. But the huge benefit I get to my bondage technique is I get a 2×4’ screen of top shelf buds . No B bud or larph. My last harvest came in at 484 grams of nothing but frosty, solid buds.
We are going to get a comparison going on my current grow and see a side by side. I should start flowering the last week of January. I’ll definitely link ya.
This is a single Maui Wowie plant.
The bud I would have gotten would look so much different if I just let it grow natural. It had been Fimmed 3 times already.
My bondage technique…
I bent the main top 90 degrees. Lots of other crazy turns to make it fit.
I have 238 grams of cured Maui Wowie.
My clones of this Maui Wowie plant. Amazing potent smoke! Very high Limonene profile with a tropical mix when harvested. But after curing turned more to a lemon mixed with a more prevelant herbal, Ocimene like smell. Very cerebral! Gotten a couple good headaches after over indulging. Dehydrated as hell too. Drank a liter of water in an hour.
This was the craziest bondage I’ve done so far!
I was making Uturns with branches and going over others. Didn’t leave a centimeter of empty screen.
When they all dried they were stiff 12-16" tall buds. All top shelf nugs super hard and dripping with a heavy coating of resin.
It was a pain in the ass to untie each individual green twine. Then branches were tangled together and had to be maneuvered carefully so I didn’t disturb my trichomes. Took forever!!
I couldn’t grow tall sativa strains like this one if I didn’t scrogg.
I love those colors! I need some red in my garden. *wanders off to Google red strains
Ok I did…wadda ya tink?
Now see that is another question that I have, I have never been able to grow HARD buds…now mind ya I have grown really respectable buds, and kick ass stuff…but my buds have never been hard like ones I see coming out of the dispensaries…Is there some trick to it? It is too high of heat? Cause I grow in a cool room 72 days, and 60’s night. Is it strain dependent? Any input on that would be much appreciated as well.
Fantastic, tag me when you go along and start taking pics. What I really want to know is if the quantity is better or if it just produces bigger buds, but less of them. That is some wild training you got going on!!
Don’t know if I have the patience for that. I love messing around with them but only so much. Some of my friends already think I’m crazy…lol…but they always want to smoke it.
AN is not difficult to use, you start out weaker then increase as the plant gets some age. It is basically 2nd week I use 2mm per quart, week 3 I use 3mm per quart, and then 4th and up I use 4mm per quart. All the rest is add on, they have a product for everything, silica, resin enhancers, budding node enhancers, then the sugars and the microbes, and the …lol…in short they have a ton of add on’s. Some of them work great and some of them I quit using because I didn’t see any difference. They have the basic PH line, then two other higher end more expensive lines, and both hydro and coco lines. The thing I like about AN is the PH perfect part, no matter how much of what I have added to my water, the PH perfect main nutes always make it between 5.5 and 5.8 PH. No adding up or down, and no testing necessary. I can only imagine that is a godsend in a hydro grow. They are not cheap, but they aren’t the most expensive either.
Those are some CRAZY roots on them things! Beautiful grow!
how many plants and how tall were they ? For the 238 g?
You PH your water using Jacks right? Beautiful plants, ol Spud got it going on lol.
Your pictures speak for you @Tygrow78.
Well done!
I love the Maui!
Is that a T5 you have running across the back between the tent poles? Do you run it during flower? What is your light set up?
I feel its all about your lights and the quality flower your going to get. I’m an Advanced Nutrients guy and run the full lineup in DWC. I have noticed my buds are more solid since switching to dwc.
You should get those buckets out and give it a try @sssportsmfg.
I have a new Marshydro SP3000, and then I run 2 54 watt HO T5 bulbs with 3000k bulbs during flower.
I do believe I will, half 10gal coco and half 5gal DWC.
