Introduce yourself!

Not so much Criminal Justice yet, I was working more with crime scenes and evidence prior so this is a much happier place to work ha.

I can imagine! I tried applying for a crime scene specialist position here in Tucson because of my background in photography. I made it through most of the process, but I guess they didn’t like my interview. Oh well, their loss. Maybe you can use your knowledge from a consulting perspective?

HA that funny, I got to do crime scene photography there due to my background too (took a lot of photography classes when I was younger.) Now i just help taking photos of plants here every now and then.

Hi everyone, my name is Nick Kelly. I’m the founder and licensee/designer of Knights Hemplar tier 3 producer/processor in Hoquiam Wa. KH was licensed in Aug of 2015 and now has a year of sales in the rear view mirror as we enter into 2017. We are an all indoor hydroponic grow. We sprout about 25 strains with 6 being our main hitters. Currently we have expanded to 8500 square feet and expect to hit our 30k if not this summer then next. At that time we will get into doing some outdoor which is very exciting.

I’m an IT and audio engineer, been messing around with midi and sound desing/sampling since 1988. I have a degree in Audio Engineering from the Seattle Art Institute Back in the day I made a few 12" dance records and some commercial audio when living in San Jose and Albany in Norther Ca in the mid to late 90’s. Got into growing in 1994 with some close friends from Humboldt.

Looking forward to networking with like minded folks and enable the industry to flourish! I measure my own success by how I help others to succeed. Feel free to checkout my instigram at https://www.instagram.com/the_knights_hemplar/ and I keep a FB at knightshemplar.com as a sort of journel of our progression if you want to check it out as well. It’s not updated as often at the instigram. Feel free to reach out anytime

Lol I worked at all Apple when I was in the South bay back when they were without Jobs. It was an interesting time to be in Cupertino for sure. He was busy with NEXT which eventually became Pixar. Glad to know you as well and thank you!

@Knights_Hemplar… Can you explain a little bit more about what method of hydro growing you use and what medium? Welcome aboard. I’m a startup grower in Alaska, and interested in your methods and how you’ve successfully grown your business.

Any really good ones you like? Always interested to see what fellow photographers are doing.

@Knights_Hemplar Welcome! Glad to have you on board. Do you have any midis or pieces that we could listen to?

Alaska, I’m from Alaska! Graduated from Chugiak High in 1985. I would love to get involved in something up there actually I have property available in the Matsu Valley near Big Lake. KH uses a mix of vermiculite perlite. Just to get us going we went with the most simple that was tested and true. We are working towards a sea of green technique that will up our yield.

Very nice pics @Knights_Hemplar! It looks like a big grow. I’m an Alaskan resident, but only been in Alaska for 3+ years. (Transplant from Oregon) Started in Sterling, still have a log cabin home there. Used to work on the slope @ Deadhorse but big cuts up there. Took a job down in the southeast on Mitkof Island/Petersburg working for the Electric Utility. Decided to take a leap and start a legal grow. One year of paperwork, construction and a one way money pit and I’m almost licensed.

I think i used to fly over big lake leaving anchorage heading to the slope. It looks like its just the right distance away from anchorage.

Yes we are a substantial grow, right now we are at about 8500sf of canopy and about to create vegitation room so we can harvest 100lbs in about two weeks.

I lived in Ak for about 25 years then moved to Ca to get a computer job. Fell into making underground dance music records in the North and South Bay area which lead me the canna realm. Where are you looking to setup your grow? My relatives are out there near Big Lake and are going to get licensed in a year or so. We plan on doing a large outdoor grow then with the profits create an indoor situation like we have here in Wa. The control you get with an all indoor grow is great the cannabis is just so much higher quality. Great cannabis can come from outdoor no doubt, but the numbers are always higher with indoor from my expereince. None the less, we want to do an outdoor then buildout when profits are there.

That sounds like a smart plan to me. The long hours of daylight should be good for a summer grow. I 've been wondering about greenhouse and high tunnel growing. I know two growers who grow outdoors during the summer, and indoors the rest of the year. Some kind of light deprivation would probably be required because of the long days, unless you plan to grow monsters or better yet auto’s.

Definitely still room in the industry up here, there’s only about 60 businesses up and running right now. There’s 3-4 hundred who’ve applied, but I’d say only 50% of them are serious, and maybe 50% of them will actually get off the ground. I’ve heard that many are waiting a year or more before they start to avoid the startup swings and pitfalls. I personally think it’s better to get started and spend that time creating your brand and reputation. It’s a small market in comparison to the other rec states.

I hope to expand significantly after a year, with the goal of 7500 sq ft within 3 years. I’ve got my eye on several 2 acres lots that are flat, treeless, and have 3 phase electric lines running along the edge of the property. I have a small empire building in my head

I’ve always been interested in Ruderalis, and I gotta ask, do you think it would be better for places with more extremes, like Alaska?

I imagine some controlled breeding might make it more interesting too.

I was just reading about some breeders in Alaska who’ve been introducing ruderalis to popular strains and creating some new strains. Auto’s are a great way to go up here since we have 20+ hours of daylight from late spring to early fall. Some locations don’t even really get dark. They’ve been adding the ruderalis and the strains benefit from the extra hardiness, and disease tolerance. It pretty much makes a really easy to grow plant that can survive all kinds of conditions yet still yield some potent bud. 60 day harvests from seed to bud and a very forgiving plant makes for an easy high tunnel grow. The more I think about it the more I wonder why I’m not doing it…

My Name is Myron. I am the Chief Financial Officer of Cannassentials. We are a ultra-organic legal recreational grower in the Oregon. My expertise is in the business side of things as I also run several not-cannabis industry companies.
Our Master Grower, Shane Budd and I are always interested in hearing about other people that grow our way. We are especially interested in hearing people experiences with new and different types of greenhouses.
Greenhouse science for the industry is a challenge that we enjoy facing everyday and would love to exchange information.
