@alicek Getting your environment dialed in and creating a routine for yourself is important and it will make growing so much easier. Things like maintaining adequate air flow and controlling your relative humidity and temperatures are important for a healthy plant in an enclosed space. The light will put out some heat no matter what setting you choose and can heat up a small space in a hurry. If you are going to veg for a while then the veg setting is what I would use.
The free phone app for a light meter is call Photone. It is pretty accurate.
Thanks. I’ll get it.
Yea the plant container is small super small dollar tree sellls dollar buckets put holes in the bucket and go from there i do know plants get hard to grow after they get bigger probably something to do with the roots…
But she said she was running a led so it could be the light when i had the led it said that it was 1000 watts but wasn’t 1000 true watts but i bought a HID light and they were able to grow they really loved the light
Yea get the app
use the app
Then record results im sure someone will be glad to interpret it
Got the App to measure the light. I won’t be a bit surprised to learn that I’m not using it correctly, but maybe someone can tell me about that from the numbers I’m reading. They bounce around a lot as I hold the phone, but these are pretty much at the center of each measurement:
PPFD – 2400
DLI – 132.9
Lux 137,000
Here is some articles to read.
PPFD: https://aggressivegarden.com/ppfd/
DLI: The Daily Light Integral of Plants
Lux: How to Measure Light Intensity: Understanding & Using a Lux Meter
How far from the light are you taking the measurements?
Hi Nacho,
Thanks, Nacho, for the links re lighting. I have done quite a bit of reading but nothing tells me what to do about the fact that my DLI reading is 132 while ideal for marijuana is 30–45. No article I’ve read even addresses not-ideal numbers and all of my numbers seem to be way over-the-top. Nothing I read suggests anything near my 132 DLI for example. Am I reading mine light wrong? Is there some kind of calculation I should do, or some movement of my light to bring my 132 down to 50?
And, tree trunks, here’s my measurement info:
The light was set at 24 inches from the top of the plant when I took the initial readings I reported above. I held the meter right at the top of the plant, so 22 inches is likely the distance to the light. The manufacturer of the light prescribes 18-24 inches distance between light and plant top.
I raised the light to 27"/29" from the top (varying at different parts of the plant) and got this:
PPFD 1500 (down from 2400)
DLI 87.8 (down from 132.9)
Lux of 9,400 (down from 13,200)
I haven’t tried one of them apps yet, but I’ve heard a lot of talk about them. And from what I have been told and understand you need to put a piece of paper over the top of your camera. It’s a certain weight paper also. I’m fairly certain someone else will chime in with all those details.

Yes, I did that. The App gives clear directions on how to diffuse the light and it wouldn’t give me a measurement until after I’d done it;
happilyretired In truth, I didn’t use the right weight paper to create the diffuser. It calls for 22lb and my paper is only 20lb. This might well be the source of my problems! Thanks for bringing this up.
I think I’ll just go back to the distance the light maker recommends. The plant’s been doing just fine since I got this light and I might just as well trust them until I can get my hands on some 22lb paper!
sorry, I’m no help. I have a light meter, the numbers on it bounced around quite a bit to even when sitting on a stool or something. By the time I figured the light meter out and then was told that I needed a different kind for LED lights. bye then I had figured out how to read my plants and I don’t even use one.

You only need the paper if using an iPhone. I think @Dog_Fart1 or @MrMonkey420 know which grade of paper to use. If it’s an android phone you don’t need it.
See my response to happily retired just a couple comments above.
I read them. I have been looking for PAR charts for that light and haven’t found any yet. What information I have read about that light makes me think it a very powerful light. I think you shouldn’t have problems with it if you have the recommended heights from the manufacturer. Just make sure the app is set for LED Full Spec with that light.
22lb printer paper, specifically…think its in the help section on the app or their web.
Welcome to the forum and the family @alicek . Don’t lose hope. You find that it is like therapeutic therapy.
And all the people here are a tremendous help. Looking forward to seeing you grow, and good luck
Thanks. Happy to be here. Fingers crossed for that good luck!
How are the plants behaving under the new light
The plant loves the new light. Lots of new growth. I tied the single cola to the side and it opened up a half dozen new little shoots that were tucked away out of the light. They really have come to life and it’s looking good. I’m wanting it to grow horizontally rather than vertically to the extent possible. Otherwise, I’m going to have something of a space problem.
Maybe you can tell me if this is true: I understand that my Trainwreck is capable of growing very tall, but that doesn’t really happen until flowering. By the time I switch it to flowering light, I’ll be back home from our trip so I can figure out a new place for it if needed. But if it’s going to add more than a foot or two while I’m away and it’s still vegetating, it could be a problem. Here’s a picture of its current state – if, in fact, I’ve done this picture thing right; I still don’t have that figured out:
