Introduce yourself!

Hi Growers Network,

I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Alexander Kinney, and I’m a fourth year PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Arizona. I’m currently launching my dissertation (tentatively) titled “The Green Rush: Institution Work and Relational-Pragmatics in the Transforming Cannabis Industry Field.” I’m exploring how cannabis entrepreneurs overcome unique boundaries to doing business related to contradictory regulations and unclear industry norms. In other words, I’m attempting to understand how businesses and people on the supply side of the cannabis market grapple with various problems as it plows full steam ahead towards becoming a a fully sanctioned commercial industry.

Besides my day job, I’m a soon-to-be married, 27 year old who also DJ’s as a hobby and is an avid vinyl collector. Thanks for being such a welcoming and cutting-edge community!

Best,

Alex

I’d be interested in providing examples of our problems and solutions.

Will my farm get a mention by name in your dissertation?

We produce cannabis in a similar manner as a traditional farmer would produce corn.

Hi Farmer_Dan. One simple example would be the contradiction between State laws that permit (and support) the development of the cannabis industry and the Federal laws that criminalize the production and sale of cannabis as a Schedule 1 substance.

If you’re interested in the project and/or possibly participating feel free to shoot me an email and I’d love to discuss more about it. There are strict IRB protocols I have to follow to prevent the doxxing of individuals who willingly participate, and furthermore nobody who hasn’t explicitly agreed to participate is going to be included in this study (e.g. I’m not collecting data on this board without anybodies consent). I take this ethical concern with a critical seriousness…as my job honestly depends on it. So the simple answer to your question is, no your farm will not get a mention.

Hello everybody!

I am a 29 year old Cannabis advocate from Williams Lake BC. My business partner and I are doing up a business plan to set up an indoor Cannabis Farm here in response to the recreational legalization in Canada. We have found some pretty unique things that we will be implementing into our farm and I am excited to share those as we go through the processes.
When I was a teenager I had practiced Tae Kwon Do and earned my 3rd Degree Black Belt. I was also an assistant instructor and tournament judge who went under rigorous leadership and development training. I had a trustworthy reputation in the association and was called on as a mentor constantly. During those years I also played football and rugby, eventually sustaining a neck injury ending my sporting career in my Grade 12 year.
After high-school I became a Tire Technician driving a service truck working on 18-Wheelers and eventually started a business with my father called Canada Tire Doctors. A mobile tire shop that would service your tire needs where ever you needed us, specializing in luxury and performance cars. As the saying goes, don’t do business with family. My father being a highly religious, retired police officer, found out I consumed Cannabis an consequently kicked me out of the company that I exclusively designed. Not all is lost though, that company has expanded since then and as far as I know just opened up to selling franchises! Even though I am no longer apart of that company, I take a lot of pride in that.
More recently I have spent the last 3 years as a Truck Driver to support my family while waiting for my next business opportunity. In that time I have traveled from as far north as the Territories borders, as south as the mexican border, as far west as the ocean and as far east as Winnipeg. I have seen some wonderful things and have had some wonderful adventures, but trucking just isn’t for me. Cannabis has always been my passion, and always will be. It seems all of my spare time is spent doing research on this wonderful plant.
Some time ago I had a little 1 light hydro set up in my basement to supplement my consumption, it had to be taken down and given away due to my unstable living situation. I often reflect back to this time and the true passion I felt for my plants. I never felt to relaxed in my life as I did when I was listening to music and caring for them. For years I have been searching for that ultimate feeling of relaxation and pride.
So now my next venture is to start my Farm to grow Cannabis, the one thing that has always been good to me in life, next to my beautiful wife-to-be of course! With the end goal to create “top-shelf” craft quality Cannabis, even the most picky connoisseur will crave.
I don’t claim to be an expert in anything, in fact quite the opposite. I am here to learn from everybody so that I can better myself as an individual, and as a future Cannabis Farmer. That being said, I am always open to advice and corrections. I’m also very friendly and always open to a good conversation so feel free to drop me a line!
Looking forward to getting to know everybody here on Growers Network!

Good to see some fellow Canadians! Us folks in Ottawa take alot techniques and strategies from our freinds in BC for the best success in the northern climate. Lets see how this industry explodes with the legalization of recreational cannabis!

Hey all, my name is Jeni. I am a marketer by trade but I have a variety of interests, most related to creating things, hanging out with dogs, growing plants of all varieties, or having philosophical discussions

What do you love?!

More about me:
I currently work as the Asst. Director of Marketing for NurserySource, we manufacture a product line called RediRoot (its a pretty cool air-pruning container). We also love to provide grows and businesses with custom solutions that can replace products or systems that just don’t quite work for them…for example; NurserySource produces the GroPro Premium fabric pots for Sunlight Supply.

Before I worked with NurserySouce I helped to found an asymetrical marketing company called CB7 Media (formerly CBZ Media), where we focused on providing insights into the challenging cannabis market and content creation.

I am here because I would love to make connections here as I am always trying to learn more about…well everything.

I especially want to learn more about commercial growing and understanding some of the challenges that growers at that level face. For that matter that same curiosity extends to any businesses or entrepreneurial endeavors within the cannabis space.

Feel free to reach out if you have questions or thoughts.

Cheers!

Welcome @jenilee! What do you think is one of the biggest challenges in marketing in the cannabis industry?

Hunter!

That is a loaded question lol.

I would say it depends on the area you are working in to some extent.

Compliance in marketing materials can be challenging if you are selling products that contain cannabis.

Beyond that there is so much saturation in the market I feel it is difficult to differentiate products in a way that communicates authentically with a customer or end user. Cannabis is currently a small market compared to what it can/will be when cannabis is decriminalized and an ability to stand out in your vertical is key.

Thanks for the question

I am Veronica and I am the Horticulture Sales Scientist at ILLUMITEX a start-up company in Austin, TX. I’ve been in the Hort industry since I graduated college in the mid 80’s and it is the first time I work with grow lights. I been doing a lot of reading or what some call “research” about the difference of HID and LED grow lights. For sure I have bias towards LED’s but then… the Dutch growers (the best in the world) all use LED’s. It is the type of product that once your try you don’t go back. Like having an I-phone…but again you need to choose what is best for your specific growing operation after trialing different options.
I am here because I want to support the cannabis community and share my experiences in other crops like orchids, ornamentals, fruit and vegetables under greenhouse.
I live in Chicago, close to my two daughters. I love the west so much, I have a home in Buhl, ID close to the Snake River. I love hiking and nature. I belong to a Toastmasters club in Chicago and do public speaking to promote cannabis to different audiences. My next speech title is: How cannabis can improve your life?

Hey Veronica, welcome to Growers Network. We are happy to have you and the ILLUMITEX team on the forum. I know that Fluence is based in Austin as well, does your team ever work with their team on any joint research? That is great to see you live in Chicago, that is where @Kareenabis420 from our team grew up. What is the cannabis industry like in Chicago?

High. I’m Steven Clark no I’m not a grower or run a business yet. But I’m an almost 60 year old vet that has been fighting for the right for all of us to have access to cannabis. I run a Facebook page and repost stories I find that many never get to see because I hunt in place’s that are not to main streamed internet source’s. I always read and then research to be sure I’m sharing something true and not false. I have been doing this for years at 60 that’s been awhile. Although right now I live in a state where it is not legal yet. We hope to this year have something. I have saw the change over the years that many have not. This is why I know WE must change, the cannabis community in a whole. We have to act, look and prove to the world we want this life saving plant legal. I go after people on FB all the time to quit posting stupid stuff. If you don’t think THEY see this your fooling no one. We just need to change and act like we want change. I may get kicked out because I’m don’t do business in cannabis but I have devoted allot of my life to it.

Hi Nick,
OSRAM the German company just bought Fluence. Fluence in Austin started by ILLUMITEX former employees after a bad experience with our former CEO. Now we have a new CEO who is innovative and knows what is doing. Still need to work on improving our relationship with Fluence  In Illinois we have 20 Awarded Cultivation Centers Permits and Chicago approved the medicinal marijuana vote. As you know Chicago is a green city so the possibilities are endless. We haven’t got a cannabis customer in Chicago yet but we are selling LED’s to The Arts School Institute of Chicago…so our lights must to be appealing to the eye

I would love any info to share. It is hard sometimes to find creditable info and info that is not already posted every where. I like insights into the business of cannabis and legal problems many are facing today.
